GTA 6 Writers Discuss Satire Direction: Less Focus on Specific Politicians, More on Conspiracy Theories and Everyday Absurdity

Recently, the GTA 6 writing team discussed the game's satirical direction: rather than focusing on specific real-world politicians or political movements, the work exaggerates conspiracy theories and the public's bizarre reactions to everyday events. Rupert Humphries, Senior Vice President of Narrative, stated that the team often starts from phenomena they find amusing, but given the long development cycle, topics that are briefly popular may become outdated by the time of release.

This doesn't mean the political climate will disappear from the game world. A Florida-style political atmosphere will still be presented through campaign signs, robocalls, radio ads, and political talk shows. Donald Trump and the MAGA movement are not specific targets the team intends to parody individually.

The interview also touched on the series' long-standing theme of the "American Dream." Humphries believes that today, this aspiration might be as concrete as buying a house for one's family or paying off a mortgage; the significant wealth gap in South Florida also provides context for the story. He stated that Jason turns to drug dealing and bank robbery due to his material circumstances, but the team wants players to judge his motives for themselves.

Lucia is the driving force in their relationship. Her character was not fully defined from the start but gradually took shape during the writing of their shared scenes. The team also introduced the older Raul to guide them toward larger-scale heists. In the open world, the writing team hopes that conversations among pedestrians on the street will hold up even if players stop to listen closely.
