"Death Stranding 2" Sparks DLSS 5 Debate; Hideo Kojima Worries AI Restoration May Deviate from Original Vision

Recently, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach became involved in discussions related to DLSS 5. In the Koji10 podcast, Hideo Kojima discussed AI-based restoration of works. He believes AI could make restoring old footage easier, but expressed concern that it might alter visual choices intentionally made by creators.

Hideo Kojima cited examples such as AI's proficiency in animating old photos or adding color to them. He suggested that 4K restoration of old films, which currently requires manual effort, might become easier with AI assistance in the future. Based on this, he speculated that people might eventually stop producing certain types of remakes.

However, Hideo Kojima is more concerned about whether restorations respect the original work. He explained that there are reasons behind a work's specific lighting setup; if AI does not understand these creative intentions, it might change choices deliberately made by the original author, even if it can process the visuals. He stated that he dislikes the idea of AI modifying his own works autonomously; while the situation might be different if he controlled the AI himself, he did not provide a definitive judgment.

Hideo Kojima believes that such technologies may become commonplace to some extent. He noted that music remasters and old film restorations still require the involvement of engineers and production teams. Regarding the vision of AI automatically handling more work in the future, he clearly stated that he is not particularly fond of the idea.
