Highways have heavy traffic flow and high vehicle speeds. Serious traffic violations such as driving against traffic or reversing can easily lead to accidents. Recently, the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security released a typical case of illegal wrong-way driving on a highway.
According to reports, on September 27, 2026, while conducting video patrols on the Jiangxi Luxi section of the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, traffic police discovered a sedan reversing in the emergency lane. They immediately identified and tracked the vehicle, while simultaneously dispatching road units to handle the situation.
The video shows the vehicle reversing for a distance before making a U-turn and driving against traffic. It continued driving the wrong way until it exited at the Luxi toll station ramp, where it was subsequently caught by police officers waiting at the toll booth.
When confronted by the police, driver Zhou claimed that he had recently changed his phone and the unclear navigation misled him into missing the exit. With low fuel, he believed he couldn't reach the next exit, so he reversed directly. After reversing for some distance and seeing no vehicles behind, he turned around and drove against traffic all the way. Investigation revealed that his reversing and wrong-way driving covered a distance of 3 kilometers.
Traffic police severely criticized and educated Zhou, and in accordance with the law, imposed a combined fine of 400 yuan for his illegal acts of reversing and driving against traffic on the highway. Additionally, 24 points were deducted from his driver's license, which was detained as per regulations.
Guangdong traffic police also reminded drivers that missing a highway exit might seem like a minor issue warranting only a brief stop or reversal. However, on one-way, fully enclosed high-speed highways, especially during holidays with dense traffic, such actions can easily cause serious accidents, potentially leading to fatal crashes.
If you miss an exit on the highway, do not attempt to forcibly "correct" your mistake by braking suddenly, stopping, reversing, changing lanes aggressively, or even driving against traffic. Drivers should "accept the mistake," maintain their speed, continue forward, pay close attention to highway signs, and look for the next exit.
