Yuri on Ice is celebrating its 10th anniversary with new merchandise and Blu-ray releases. However, the previously announced prequel film focusing on Victor was canceled in April 2024, and these anniversary plans do not include any story continuations.
This original anime by MAPPA first aired on October 6, 2016, and concluded on December 22 of the same year. It follows figure skater Yuri Katsuki and his relationship with his coach, Victor Nikiforov, as well as their competitive journey. In the ending, Yuri, who won the silver medal, asks Victor to continue as his coach, and Victor expresses his willingness to stay and train with him. The finale also features a scene of the two performing together.
MAPPA had announced a prequel film centered on Victor's experiences as a competitor in April 2017 and released a trailer. In a 10th-anniversary retrospective, a ComicBook.com author noted that the film could have explored how Victor grew into a top-tier skater and why he later shifted to coaching Yuri. However, these are merely the author's speculations about the character's backstory; the officially announced 10th-anniversary plans do not include any promises of new sequels.
