Peter Molyneux, the creator of Fable, is not involved in the reboot developed by Playground Games. However, precisely because he is detached from the RPG's development, he can look forward to experiencing the game for the first time as an ordinary player.
In a recent interview with PCGamesN, the former founder and CEO of Lionhead Studios, now founder and creative director of 22Cans, was asked for his thoughts on the upcoming new Fable game set to release next year.
"Seeing the game I poured my heart into continue on fills me with immense pride; that is my strongest feeling," Molyneux stated. "I have also always been happy to see the evolution of this game."
He admitted that the RPG's first official trailer—featuring British comedian Richard Ayoade at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase—made him "a bit worried, feeling it was too fairytale-like." However, the latest gameplay demo released by Playground Games since then has "greatly encouraged" him.
"They have retained many of the traits that make Fable unique," Molyneux said. "I'm still curious about how the morality system will be designed and how it will visually impact the game world, but I guarantee you, I'll definitely be first in line to play."
As a developer, Molyneux noted that he inevitably "plays the game he's working on hundreds or even thousands of times." But with this new Fable, he will have a completely different experience.
"In a sense, this will be the first time I truly play Fable as a player," he said. "It's sure to be especially interesting, and I can't wait."
Molyneux had previously revealed that watching the Fable trailer made him "very emotional," even bringing him "close to tears," because "what we created back then has come alive and will continue on." At the time, he also felt the game was "a bit too clean and orderly, lacking a lived-in feel," but believed the developers still had "plenty of time to polish the characters and add the kind of grassroots texture players want to see in this world." Clearly, after a few months, he is much more satisfied with the current presentation.
