Some missions in GTA 6 will allow players to choose their own escape routes. During car chases, players can let their partner drive while they handle the shooting. Rob Nelson from Rockstar North stated that the team wants to give players more opportunities to decide how to act, while maintaining the quality of the narrative experience.
The partnership between the two protagonists is also reflected in police chases. Players can hand over driving duties to their partner and shoot at pursuers from the back seat. Nelson gave an example: blowing out a police car's tires could cause a collision that blocks trailing vehicles. The partner might also cross railroad tracks just before a train passes, shaking off the pursuers.
The team aims to ensure that missions involving wanted levels or heists remain consistent with the related systems in free-roam gameplay. However, missions still have boundaries. Nelson stated that certain story segments require passing through specific plot points, and too many choices could also impact mission quality.
