Recently, editors at the foreign media outlet ComicBook compiled a list of six terrifying video game enemies that are difficult to stop, including the Xenomorph from Alien: Isolation and the Tyrant from Resident Evil 2. The editors noted that when facing pursuers that cannot be defeated immediately, players can only hide, delay, and strive to survive, with this sense of powerlessness forming a key part of the horror experience.
The Xenomorph in Alien: Isolation relentlessly tracks the protagonist throughout the space station. Limited resources are primarily used to distract or temporarily block it, while shifting encounter scenarios and environmental changes make the chases unpredictable. Margaret from Resident Evil 7 cannot be killed for a certain period; her unpredictable movements, along with swarms of insects and bodily transformations, further heighten the sense of dread.
The other three enemies also have their own pursuit mechanics: The Thin Man from Little Nightmares 2 emerges from televisions and closes the distance by teleporting; Laura from The Evil Within can only be temporarily stalled during chase sequences, with fire buying time for escape; and the Hunter from Dead Space regenerates even when limbs are severed, forcing players to first create distance before they have a chance to eliminate it completely.
The list concludes by comparing the original and remake versions of the Tyrant in Resident Evil 2. In the original, players could temporarily shake him off by changing areas; the remake, however, has him continuously pursuing the player across a larger playable area, with nearby music and footsteps serving as warnings that danger is approaching.
