Microsoft has opened pre-orders for the Surface Laptop Ultra. This is Microsoft's first laptop to adopt the NVIDIA RTX Spark platform, with a starting price of $2,599 and scheduled shipping on October 16.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is powered by the Arm-based NVIDIA N1X platform. The base configuration features an 18-core CPU, a 5120-core Blackwell GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD; the listed top-tier configuration, priced at $5,899, includes a 20-core CPU, a 6144-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, and a 1TB SSD.
This laptop features a 15-inch mini-LED HDR touchscreen with a peak brightness of up to 2000 nits and weighs approximately 4.5 pounds. Ports include three USB Type-C ports, USB-A, HDMI, a full-size SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, while charging uses a magnetic USB Type-C connector.
The maximum 128GB of unified memory also highlights its focus on local AI tasks. Microsoft also demonstrated gaming capabilities, stating that titles like Gears of War: E-Day can reach 60 frames per second.
The HP OmniBook X 14, which also uses the RTX Spark platform, starts at $2,999, with the 16-inch model starting at $3,199. The Surface Laptop Ultra's entry-level price is $400 lower than the former; however, HP models offer advantages in memory, storage, and OLED screens, so specific configurations should be compared when making a purchase decision.
