CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama recently stated his support for PlayStation's transition to digital game distribution. He believes digital games are more convenient for players and that reducing costs associated with physical discs could improve developers' profitability.
Matsuyama noted that publishing physical games requires purchasing discs from PlayStation or Nintendo, which adds an extra cost beyond transportation and sales processes. Therefore, he supports reducing reliance on physical discs.
Game size was another reason he cited. Using GTA 6 as an example, Matsuyama argued that such large-scale games are difficult to fit onto a single disc, a problem that other modern games may also encounter.
The shift of PlayStation games to digital distribution remains controversial, with not everyone in the industry agreeing with this direction. Matsuyama's comments reflect his views on the convenience and cost-effectiveness of digital distribution, rather than an announcement that PlayStation will completely cease physical game releases.
