43 VR-Related Patents Transferred to Meta; Sony's Support for PSVR2 May Continue to Decline

Between June and September 2026, Sony transferred 43 US VR-related patents to Meta. ComicBook linked this transfer to PlayStation's recent support for PSVR2, suggesting a gradual move away from the VR business. This is a judgment made by the media based on existing signs, not an announcement by Sony that it is ending its VR investment.

These 43 patents cover augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, and head-mounted display devices, and were originally filed by Sony between 2010 and 2022. The article also mentions an agreement dated December 2025 involving the expected transfer of 419 global patents, with 180 from the US and 239 from other regions.

PlayStation launched PSVR2 in 2023. Since then, it has released a limited number of new VR games, and some original PSVR titles have not been ported to the new device. The PC adapter announced in 2024 expanded the range of games available for PSVR2, but this also reflects insufficient content support on the console side.

Currently, third-party and independent teams are still releasing games for PSVR2, and the device has a base of players who continue to use it.
