A roundup of high-difficulty battles in the Final Fantasy series selects five groups of hidden bosses that are tougher than the story's final bosses, with the author ranking Absolute Virtue from Final Fantasy XI at the top. In the author's view, the challenge of these optional battles lies not just in higher boss HP, but also requires players to master equipment, status effects, party composition, and battle mechanics.
Ozma from Final Fantasy IX is located in Chocobo's Air Garden. After completing the Friendly Monster side quest, the conditions for damaging it change, but moves like Meteor and Curse can still quickly wipe out the party. Emerald Weapon from Final Fantasy VII has one million HP, and underwater battles usually have a twenty-minute time limit; Ruby Weapon does not take normal damage until certain phases and can remove party members from battle.
The International version of Final Fantasy X and later HD releases added Yojimbo. Facing its main body and regenerating arms, players need to continuously manage the battle. Yazmat from Final Fantasy XII tests players' endurance with over fifty million HP in the original version and various deadly attacks.
Topping the list is Absolute Virtue from Final Fantasy XI. Players spent a long time figuring out how to defeat it, and the developers later adjusted its stats and battle time limits. This list is the author's review and ranking of high-difficulty battles in the series, not an official difficulty conclusion.
