The Outlast Trials, a cooperative horror game developed by Red Barrels, has just broken its concurrent player record, surpassing 120,000 players. Set within the expansive universe of The Outlast series, the game's previous peak was 36,000 players, achieved during its Early Access launch on Steam in 2023.

Red Barrels attributes this achievement to several key factors:

First, The Outlast Trials is currently available at a significant discount during the Steam Autumn Sale, priced at just $4 (¥13.6 in China). Please note that, at the time of writing, there are only 14 hours left until the Autumn Sale ends.

Secondly, the studio revealed that approximately half of its player base is from China, where the game's popularity is surging. Of course, the arrival of Halloween has also contributed to this boost, even though it is not one of the new horror titles released this month.

The Outlast Trials launched its official version 1.0 in spring 2024. Although the game supports single-player mode, it was originally designed as a cooperative experience for up to four players. Since then, the game has regularly rolled out seasonal content and events, continuously adding new antagonists, skills, maps, and more.

Next, the game will host its annual Halloween "Ghost" event, followed by Season 8 in December. This season will introduce a new main antagonist, also known as a "Primary Asset," along with a new map and more events.

The Outlast Trials is a popular GameSpot title, having been featured on GameSpot's lists for Best Horror Multiplayer Games and Best Horror Games (Overall). GameSpot's review states: "It captures the same terrifying atmosphere as the previous Outlast games. Although the horror may be slightly diluted in multiplayer, tense laughter is likely to replace fear as you and your allies narrowly evade monsters in the dark."
