Mafia III and Call of Duty: WWII Briefly Free on European PS Store; Claimed Copies May Be Removed from Libraries

Players in the UK and some European countries were previously able to claim Mafia III and its related DLCs, as well as Call of Duty: WWII, for free from the PlayStation Store without requiring a PS Plus membership. Subsequently, the store pages were adjusted: Sony appears to have removed the page for Mafia III, while Call of Duty: WWII now displays a price tag of £54.99. It remains unclear whether already claimed copies will be retained.

It is not yet clear whether this free giveaway was an official promotion or a store pricing error. An update at midnight on October 7 showed that Sony seemed to have taken down the page for Mafia III to address the issue of UK players being able to claim the game for free; the page for Call of Duty: WWII has also been adjusted, but the restoration of the price listing does not necessarily mean that previously claimed copies have been revoked.

Store situations vary by region. In the US store, Mafia III is listed at $29.99, with its DLC shown as free; Call of Duty: WWII is priced at $59.99. It remains to be confirmed whether previously claimed content can continue to be used, and whether Sony will provide an explanation for this pricing anomaly.
