Break Through Levels While Changing the Rules: "Escape from Game Engine" Now on Steam

Japanese developer Taskibu has revealed the Steam page for the dual-perspective puzzle-action game "Escape from the Game Engine." Players can control characters to tackle levels, or switch perspectives to adjust rules such as gravity and collision detection to find solutions.

In the story, the younger sister Haruka is sucked into the game engine. Players control her as she teams up with her older brother Kaito, a creator, to try to escape the virtual world. The game features two modes: "Execution View," which lets players control the character in an action-game style, and "Edit View," used to modify elements that make up the world. After making changes, players can return to the level to observe the results.

The developers stated that the game encourages players to experiment repeatedly rather than simply seeking preset answers. Some seemingly glitchy behaviors may even serve as clues to progress through levels.

"Escape from the Game Engine" was available for hands-on play at Tokyo Game Show 2026. The developers stated that attendees responded positively to the design, which allows players to directly manipulate the game engine and experiment to find solutions. The currently listed platform is Windows PC; the Steam page is now live, but the price and release date have not yet been determined.
