AI Short Dramas Go Viral at One-Tenth the Cost of Live-Action, Generating a Full Episode Every 36 Seconds

Recently, topics such as "After watching AI short dramas, I just want to say live-action short dramas are done for" have trended on Weibo. The strong rise of AI short dramas is profoundly reshaping the development landscape of the micro-short drama industry.

Compared to traditional live-action short dramas, the most prominent advantage of AI short dramas is their low cost, with overall investment being only one-tenth that of live-action productions. Production costs that originally ran into hundreds of thousands for live-action projects can be reduced to tens of thousands under the AI model.

Small three-person teams can produce an 80-episode short drama in just five days, fully unleashing the industry's production capacity. On average, a new AI short drama is born every 36 seconds in the market.

Among the new micro-short dramas launched in the first quarter of 2026, AI-generated works account for over 95%. Many platform charts are dominated by AI content, with only one live-action short drama among the top 20 hits on a certain platform.

Technology also helps short dramas break through the limitations of physical filming locations. Scenes that are difficult to realize in live-action, such as fantasy cultivation and grand wars, can be easily achieved with AI. Character appearances remain consistent and stable, while costumes, makeup, and props are exquisite and aesthetically pleasing, precisely catering to the viewing preferences of mass-market audiences and attracting a large number of viewers.

Behind the market hype, the impact on the industry is also becoming apparent. Capital is flooding into the AI sector, causing a sharp decline in the number of live-action short drama projects. The scale of new productions has dropped by approximately 75% year-on-year, leaving many studios in Hengdian idle and numerous mid-tier actors without filming opportunities.

Furthermore, with platforms canceling guaranteed revenue-sharing models, many live-action short drama projects with high investments and limited returns have been forced to halt.

However, AI short dramas are far from perfect, and the industry still has significant shortcomings. AI-generated characters have stiff expressions and lifeless eyes, making it difficult to convey subtle and authentic emotions.

A large number of works share similar story frameworks and suffer from heavy formulaic patterns. Although the output volume is huge, very few become hits, with over 90% of production companies still operating at a loss.
