Paramount Pictures is bringing Cyberpunk 2077 to the big screen with a live-action film set in the game's dystopian world. CD Projekt Red and veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are involved in the project, which is still in its early stages. No director, cast, or release date has been announced yet.
Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, expanding the franchise beyond games and animation. According to Deadline, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura will collaborate on the project with CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio that developed the game and holds the rights to the series.
The film is still in early development, with Paramount yet to announce a director, cast, plot details, or release date. It is also unclear whether the movie will retell the story of Cyberpunk 2077 or present a new narrative within the same universe.
The game is set in Night City, a dystopian metropolis in California. Cyberpunk 2077 follows mercenary V, whose mind becomes linked to the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious rock star and terrorist. As Silverhand's consciousness gradually overtakes V's, the two join forces to find a way to save V's life while confronting the powerful Arasaka Corporation. It remains unclear whether the film will retell this story or introduce entirely new characters within the same setting.
The franchise previously expanded beyond gaming through the Netflix animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which not only reignited interest in the setting but also demonstrated that Night City can thrive in other media.
Like The Witcher series, Cyberpunk 2077 has become one of CD Projekt Red's most successful titles. The game, released in 2020, has reportedly sold over 40 million copies worldwide, with its Phantom Liberty expansion reaching 15 million sales.
Paramount Pictures' development of a Cyberpunk 2077 movie marks a significant step into video game adaptations. The studio is also collaborating with Legendary Pictures on a Street Fighter film, while a Call of Duty movie is in development, directed by Peter Berg and co-written by Taylor Sheridan.
Di Bonaventura, known for producing major franchises like Transformers and G.I. Joe, is an experienced producer for large-scale adaptations.
The Cyberpunk 2077 film is still in its early stages, with no information yet on when production will begin or when it will be released.
