Former Activision Blizzard CEO Kotick Joins Skydance Board with Confidence

With the completion of the $111 billion deal, Paramount has officially acquired Warner Bros. Discovery. The newly merged entity is named Skydance, and its new board of directors has been announced. Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick joins the board as an independent director and serves on the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee. Investor Laurene Powell Jobs also joins the board, while former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair serves as an advisor to the group.

Skydance Chairman and CEO David Ellison issued a public statement, noting that Kotick brings thirty years of experience managing global entertainment enterprises. He excels at building long-term IPs, understanding fan demands, and combining bold strategic decision-making with prudent capital allocation—expertise deemed crucial for this massive business integration.

The merger also brings Warner Bros. Games under the umbrella, home to renowned IPs such as Mortal Kombat, Batman: Arkham, Hogwarts Legacy, and the LEGO game series. While Kotick will not handle day-to-day operations, his gaming industry experience will contribute to major decisions across the entire entertainment group, including Warner Bros. Games, as a board member. Outsiders predict that Warner Bros. Games may face structural restructuring and layoffs, referencing the large-scale workforce reductions that occurred after Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Bobby Kotick officially stepped down as CEO in late 2023, following the completion of Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. During his tenure, the company was embroiled in lawsuits related to workplace harassment and a toxic corporate culture, eventually settling for $54 million. That year also saw employee open letters and strike protests, with Kotick facing significant criticism from staff. His entry into this Hollywood entertainment giant has once again sparked widespread industry discussion.
