Atari Revives Classic 1983 800XL Computer with Original Cartridge Support

Atari, the pioneer of gaming consoles, has officially announced a modernized replica of its classic 1983 8-bit computer, the 800XL. Pre-orders are now open, with an official price of $219 (approximately 1,550 RMB).

According to the official introduction, the new 800XL is not just a nostalgic collectible, but a fully functional replica computer jointly developed by Atari, Retro Games Ltd., and Plaion.

In terms of hardware, the new machine features an authentic mechanical keyboard and comes with a joystick. Notably, the console retains a functional cartridge slot, allowing players to insert their original Atari game cartridges and play them on a TV.

In addition, the 800XL comes with 25 built-in games and pre-installed Atari BASIC programming language. This means users can not only play games but also write their own programs like players did over 40 years ago, reliving the creative experience of the early home computer era.

While preserving its retro design, this replica also incorporates several modern improvements: the body provides four USB-A ports and supports HDMI output for connection to 60Hz TVs, with official 4:3 and pixel-perfect display modes available.

It even includes convenient features commonly found in emulators, such as instant save states and rewind.

In recent years, retro hardware replicas have become an industry trend, with similar products previously released for models like the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum.

However, such products typically use emulation to achieve hardware compatibility. Although they can run old software, their circuit-level logic differs significantly from the original.

Atari has not yet announced specific production numbers for this product, nor whether it will establish an official distribution channel in mainland China.
