The Matrix 5 is reportedly on Skydance and Warner Bros.' list of projects potentially slated for a 2029 release, with Drew Goddard still writing the script. 2029 is only a tentative release window, and no official date has been announced yet.
Goddard previously stated in interviews that he is still writing solo and cannot specify how long this phase will take, promising to provide updates once there is progress. The completion date for the script and the start of filming remain unclear.
Under the current plan, Goddard will serve as both writer and director for The Matrix 5, while Lana Wachowski has been introduced as an executive producer. If this arrangement holds, the fifth installment will be the first live-action film in the franchise not directed by either Lana or Lilly Wachowski.
The previous film in the series was released in 2021, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity. It has not yet been confirmed whether they will return for the fifth installment, and the new film's storyline remains undisclosed.
