Former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies reflects on the production experience during the Disney+ era in his new book, The Queerest of Folk, and discusses the ultimately canceled plans for Season 3. He believes that starting this phase with three 60th-anniversary specials may have confused viewers new to the series.
Davis also mentioned that Disney executives were unfamiliar with Doctor Who, such as not knowing about the Weeping Angels introduced after 2005. These views on the collaboration process and the opening design are his own reflections in the book.
Production schedules were also affected by changes in actors' availability. Ncuti Gatwa's prior commitment to Sex Education was extended, delaying his entry into the production. Davis subsequently adjusted the plan, writing "73 Yards" and "Dot and Bubble," which focus more on companion characters; according to the book, these two episodes were not part of his original proposal.
Davis had conceived a large-scale Dalek battle for Season 3 and planned to conclude it over four episodes. Other story ideas involved the Great Fire of London, a NASA space station, and a residential area in Manchester. The Season 3 plan was ultimately canceled, and these concepts have not become aired episodes.
