Francis Lawrence, director of Netflix's live-action BioShock film, stated that the screenplay is still being written but is now close to completion. He feels positive about the script's progress and has always hoped to bring this film to life.
Netflix announced the live-action BioShock film project in 2022, with Lawrence joining shortly after. Hollywood strikes and his involvement in another film led to a period with little public progress on the project. In 2025, reports emerged that the film's story was being reworked to fit a smaller budget.
Producer Roy Lee previously stated that the film will be based on the first entry in the BioShock series, with the adaptation focusing more on a personal perspective. In the original game, players follow Jack after an Atlantic plane crash into the underwater city of Rapture. The city collapsed after the discovery of ADAM, a genetic material that grants extraordinary abilities; how the film will arrange characters and plot details has not yet been disclosed.
