Recently, French gaming YouTuber J0nathan's channel was permanently banned by the platform, triggered by gameplay footage from the horror game "Hellraiser: Resurrection." Even though he had censored the nude scenes with black bars, his account was still banned.
The opening of "Hellraiser: Resurrection" includes intense intimate scenes and BDSM-related content, which serve as crucial plot setup for the story. The creator labeled the video as "Not suitable for children" but did not enable the platform's age restriction, assuming that censoring the nudity with black bars would be enough to avoid penalty under platform rules.
Before the ban, the channel had 190,000 subscribers, a decade's worth of content with over 3,000 videos, and was the creator's main source of income. The creator stated that the account had never received any warnings or penalties before, making the immediate permanent ban difficult to accept.
J0nathan submitted an appeal, but YouTube quickly rejected it, citing the official reason: the platform prohibits explicit content intended for sexual gratification. The creator questioned whether the moderation was overly reliant on AI automation without sufficient human review, noting that the same uncensored game footage could still be viewed normally on other YouTube channels. This incident has sparked discussion within the creator community about how to define moderation standards for mature game content and whether the appeal process is flawed. The creator mentioned he is considering further legal action under the EU's Digital Services Act.
