PS Creator Ken Kutaragi: AI Experiences May Replace Traditional Video Games

Ken Kutaragi, who led the development of the PS1, PS2, and PS3, predicts that advances in AI-driven real-time content generation will transform the form of games. He believes that future entertainment content may no longer even be called "games." Kutaragi left Sony in 2007 and has since been involved in the AI field.

In an interview during a university panel discussion, Kutaragi drew a comparison to the rapid development of early 3D fighting games. He observed that while game studios today are much larger than they were in the PS1 era, the pace of graphical technology advancement has slowed, suggesting that the next major shift may come from AI-generated content.

Kutaragi stated that research and development into real-time generation of visuals and music are underway. He expects these technologies to reach processing speeds comparable to today's game consoles by around 2028–2029. Based on this prediction, he envisions a future where communication and imagination themselves become forms of content, blurring the lines between existing games and entertainment. He also noted that the global gaming market currently exceeds 30 trillion yen and could potentially reach approximately 3,000 trillion yen in the future.
