Following the release of the major Build 42 update for Project Zomboid, third-party data shows that the game sold 305,000 copies on Steam in September, ranking tenth among the platform's best-selling titles for the month. The game has been out for over 13 years.
These sales and ranking figures come from Ampere data disclosed by The Game Business, not official sales numbers released by the developers. Build 42 launched in late July as a major update that had been in development for years.
Among other changes, Stable Build 42.20 overhauled the crafting system and the full tech tree, added livestock, and improved farming. The update also expanded map areas, introduced vertical space, adjusted the underlying engine, and integrated multiplayer functionality into the stable version.
After the update launched, the player count reached new highs, and review sentiment also improved. This surge in popularity continued into September and beyond.
