The 2016 open-world crime action game Mafia III now has a PS5 version titled Mafia III: Definitive Edition. Players who own the PS4 version can upgrade for free, without needing to repurchase it at the $30 price listed on the PlayStation Store; the free upgrade is conditional on owning the PS4 version.
The new version includes the base game and all DLC. Changes involve game progression, NPC and companion behavior, checkpoints, vehicles, and mission scripts, with improvements to lighting, draw distance, and physics effects. The official PS5 version is not referred to as a remake.
Mafia III was developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. Players assume the role of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran who seeks revenge after being betrayed by the Italian Mafia and witnessing the murder of those close to him.
Looking back at its initial release, the game suffered from numerous technical issues and received weaker reviews compared to other entries in the series; while its story, presentation, and certain scenes were praised, the open-world design felt outdated. This PS5 version offers a free upgrade for players who own the PS4 edition and includes all DLC.
