Sony has newly announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-based image upscaling technology for the base PlayStation 5. Whether existing games can utilize this technology may depend on the version of the development kit, but the scope of compatibility has not yet been confirmed.
Daniel Craig, a graphics R&D engineer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that adapting existing games for QSSR is relatively easy and requires only minor adjustments. However, Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry raised an unresolved question in a Q&A video: whether QSSR can be used with games built on Sony's older development kits. If not, developers might need to first update their games to a newer SDK before implementing the upscaling feature. He mentioned hearing that this step could pose difficulties for some older games.
Leadbetter pointed out that PSSR, used by the PlayStation 5 Pro, could previously be added to games using older SDKs, so the adaptation path for QSSR might differ. If QSSR indeed requires an SDK upgrade, subsequent porting and quality assurance work could also affect support for some older titles. Sony has not yet confirmed the compatibility range of QSSR with older SDKs, so it remains uncertain how many legacy games will ultimately support this technology.
