Glen Schofield, creator and executive producer of Dead Space, stated that creatively reusing old assets could save more money than using artificial intelligence when discussing game development costs. He cited a game concept he had in mind: making resources and files from previous works part of the story.
Schofield estimates that this approach could save the project around $25 million, bringing the budget down to approximately $60 million. These figures refer to his game concept, not the actual cost of a finished product.
He recalls that the original Dead Space cost $28 million to produce. He hopes to make another title with a budget under $150 million, particularly favoring a development style with a budget of around $70 million, a smaller team, and closer collaboration. In his view, high budgets and extensive outsourcing can affect team cohesion.
Schofield is not entirely opposed to artificial intelligence. He prefers to use it only in a few specific areas with clear purposes, such as handling object collisions or improving camera work.
