Cloud Imperium Games, the developer of "Star Citizen," has released a new cinematic trailer for the single-player spin-off "Squadron 42," opened its Steam wishlist page, and announced the full cast.
"Squadron 42" is a story-driven spin-off of the space simulation game "Star Citizen," developed by Cloud Imperium Games over 12 years. The game is led by Chris Roberts, creator of the "Wing Commander" series. As a spiritual successor to "Wing Commander," "Squadron 42" features a cast of Hollywood actors, including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Henry Cavill.
The game blends space combat, first-person shooting, and character stories presented through full motion-capture performances. CIG stated that the actors' performances are directly integrated into the gameplay, meaning players won't just see these famous actors in cutscenes.
Game Plot Summary
"In the year 2945, the United Empire of Earth (UEE) is on the verge of collapse, with outlaws and hostile alien forces from the depths of space eyeing it predatorily. Players will take on the role of a UEE Navy recruit, embarking on a perilous journey from an ordinary rookie to a central figure in a galactic war. Assigned to a massive capital ship, players will live and work alongside a vibrant crew, forging deep friendships and facing various sacrifices and life-or-death choices that will shape their future destiny, ultimately earning their own status, rank, and legend."
Game Features
"Whether piloting a ship through space battles, sneaking through enemy-controlled areas, or making critical decisions with fellow crew members, players will experience the story firsthand through action sequences, exploration, and interactive film segments. These elements connect the grand scale of a space epic with the personal risks faced by a group fighting for survival."
The trailer showcases extensive gameplay, including first-person segments involving platforming and puzzle-solving, ship customization, off-duty activities, a hacking minigame, and brief glimpses of narrative choices. Ian Duncan, best known for playing Todd Todmore in the BBC comedy "Broken News," voices the male player character; Alix Wilton Regan, who has appeared in numerous video games, voices the female player character. She portrayed Samantha Traynor in "Mass Effect 3," the Female Inquisitor in "Dragon Age: Inquisition," Aya in "Assassin's Creed Origins," and will play Lara Croft in the upcoming "Tomb Raider" game.

CIG had previously announced in August that "Squadron 42" would be delayed to the second quarter of 2027. Roberts explained that if "Squadron 42" were released in late 2026, it would not receive the attention it deserved due to the November launch of "GTA 6."
Roberts said at the time, "At CitizenCon 2024, we announced that the game would launch in 2026. Our plan was to release it in the fourth quarter, around the time of the international aerospace exhibition. But like others in the industry, I absolutely did not want this spiritual successor to 'Wing Commander,' which I have poured 12 years of blood, sweat, and tears into, to launch when 'GTA 6' sucks up all the attention. (We began development on 'Squadron 42' in 2014; work in 2013 involved setting up the studio, hiring staff, and launching the hangar module for 'Star Citizen.') Although 'GTA 6' won't be on PC in November, almost all media and most content creators will be focused on it, leaving little room for other coverage."
Following a complete meltdown during a "Star Citizen" developer livestream, an announcement of the game's delay was released. Previously, early access players complained about numerous bugs and issues in the new version. CIG held a livestream to showcase the "expected" gameplay experience, but problems persisted and even worsened. This led to developers blaming each other, creating a very tense atmosphere.
"Star Citizen" surpassed the $1 billion fundraising milestone in May—a significant achievement—shortly after the launch of a $5,000 virtual ship that players cannot actually pilot in-game. Since then, the game has raised another $50 million.
"Star Citizen" is considered one of the most controversial projects in video game history. Since its crowdfunding campaign began 14 years ago, "Star Citizen" has been mired in controversy, with some questioning whether it will ever truly launch and labeling it a scam. Virtual ships in the game, some priced at thousands of dollars, have also been a frequent target of criticism. However, its loyal fans insist it is one of the most engaging space simulations ever made and continue to inject millions of dollars into the project through ship sales.
"Star Citizen" still has no announced release date.
