Josh Brolin Discusses 'Sicario 3': Sheridan Will No Longer Serve as Screenwriter

According to Hollywood industry outlet Deadline, news broke this week that the highly anticipated Sicario 3 has officially been greenlit, with Josh Brolin, Emily Blunt, and Benicio del Toro all returning to reprise their iconic roles. However, Taylor Sheridan, the screenwriter behind the first two films, Sicario and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, will not return for the third installment, marking a major shift in the creative team. The screenplay will be written by Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders and writer for the next James Bond film, while Padraic McKinley will serve as director. Following this change in leadership, Brolin spoke out for the first time about the new direction for the series and the familiar faces he'll be reuniting with in this underworld crime saga.

In an interview with entertainment media outlet Screen Rant, Brolin stated: "We're all eager to get started on filming; it's been far too long since the last installment. We have great admiration for one another and have collaborated before. This marks my sixth time working with Benicio, and it's wonderful to reunite with Emily as well. I just sent her a voice message yesterday—I truly appreciate her talent. I believe the creative quality of this project has reached a level that will be hard to surpass."

Discussing Knight taking over writing duties from Sheridan, Brolin admitted it was a "process full of variables," but the team is ready to welcome McKinley, whom he described as an "excellent filmmaker." He also mentioned providing Knight with several "great suggestions" for the script. Although there's still a long way to go before the film reaches audiences, it's at least reassuring that, after so many years, Sicario 3 (a tentative title we came up with offhand) is finally becoming a reality.
