Amazon MGM Studios unveiled the first trailer for the series Blade Runner 2099 at New York Comic Con. The show is set to launch on Prime Video on November 25, with all eight episodes dropping simultaneously. The story takes place in Los Angeles approximately 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049.
The trailer shows that the story is set in Los Angeles, a reborn city, 50 years after Blade Runner 2049. Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a fugitive who decides to become a Blade Runner to end her life on the run. She is forced to collaborate with Orwen, a replicant played by Michelle Yeoh, whose life has only days left. Orwen's goal is to find a cure for the lifespan limitation imposed on replicants.
This trailer, released at New York Comic Con (NYCC), takes viewers to locations never before seen in the previous two films. Scenes featuring Cora and Orwen on a spaceship suggest that part of the storyline unfolds beyond Earth. The trailer also highlights the moral gray areas that were a central theme in the earlier movies.
Watching the first trailer for Blade Runner 2099 reveals plenty of information. True to the style of this compelling sci-fi work, the series explores the question of "what it means to be human." Since one of the protagonists is a replicant, much of the dialogue revolves around this theme. One line in the trailer mentions that replicants long to experience human emotions because they refuse to pretend to be something they are not. However, despite some replicants believing they should be gods, they face the flaw of short lifespans. The trailer indicates that Orwen's mission is to find someone who can cure replicants.
The trailer also features scenes of Cora, played by Hunter Schafer, following Orwen. However, as the closing line of the trailer suggests, she may not be fully aware of her true mission. The plot reveals that Cora and Orwen must join forces to track down a fugitive who could potentially destroy the entire city—a city where humans are now second-class citizens and replicants have become the ruling class. At the New York Comic Con panel, Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer, and actors Dimitri Abold, Louis Gribben, and Matthew Needham, along with showrunner/creator/executive producer Silka Luisa, took the stage alongside executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson to discuss the new series.
During the panel, Luisa revealed that Orwen is hunting down missing rogue replicants. She also stated that Cora has spent her entire life evading Blade Runners, and now, to survive, she must pose as one. Blade Runner 2099 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 25, with all eight episodes released on the same day.
