Back in August, news broke that Nicolas Cage would star as the new lead in HBO's classic anthology series "True Detective." Recently, Cage himself officially confirmed the news, stating he will play a new law enforcement officer in the fifth season, launching a fresh criminal investigation.
At New York Comic Con, the legendary actor revealed that after wrapping up filming for "Shadow Spider-Man," he will return to the small screen. The series was canceled after just one season on Amazon Prime Video. Cage explained to Entertainment Weekly: "You can't keep making movies back-to-back forever; reality eventually pushes you toward new choices. You know what I mean—what is this 'reality'? I have a family to support; I can't just keep filming movies nonstop. So I plan to take on another TV season, likely appearing in 'True Detective.'"
The announcement immediately sparked heated discussion among fans, with Cage jokingly adding: "I'm the first to officially announce this, so it should be fine, right?"
Before Cage joined this popular series, the 2024 installment "True Detective: Night Country" starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. Reis recently appeared in the "Resident Evil" film, which suffered a critical backlash and poor reviews. In 2025, series creator Issa López confirmed her return for the fifth season, hinting that the new season's plot would have significant connections to previous entries.
López told the New York Post: "All the events that took place in Ennis, Alaska, and the local characters there will have important connections to the new season's storyline."
According to Hollywood industry outlet Deadline, the fifth season of "True Detective" is set in Jamaica Bay, New York, and is scheduled to premiere in 2027. That's all the information available so far, but for the "True Detective" series, the more mystery, the better. As the project moves forward, we look forward to seeing which other actors will join Cage in the cast.
