Next week, Vision Quest will premiere on Disney+, bringing back many classic characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Early reviews for the new series have been overwhelmingly positive. The story centers on the father-son bond between Vision and his son Tommy Maximoff (played by Ruairidh Mollica), while Ultron (voiced by James Spader) returns to stir up trouble, meddling in matters that should have been left alone.
In an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, Mollica discussed his experience portraying Tommy (codenamed "Speed") and compared the character's journey of discovering his superpowers to the classic coming-of-age arc of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man from 2002.
"When I watch superhero stories, my favorite growth arc is when characters first explore their powers," Mollica explained. "It's like Peter Parker figuring out how to use his web-shooters and accidentally shooting webs in the school cafeteria. In those moments, the line between superpowers and ordinary life blurs completely, making it easy for the audience to empathize with the character."
Despite having already joined this new MCU project, the newly cast actor expressed that he still finds it hard to believe he's part of the franchise. "The character of Tommy Maximoff is so cool; I still can't believe my 'parents' are Vision and Scarlet Witch." Unfortunately, you can't choose your family, which includes Ultron—strictly speaking, this ruthless top-tier AI is Tommy's grandfather. Mollica hinted that their scenes together will be quite compelling.
"Tommy is full of curiosity about Ultron. He has known the details of the Sokovia incident since childhood, living in a world with the Avengers, fully aware of how dangerous Ultron is. Yet suddenly, he must face him head-on or share the same dimension. This naturally raises many questions."
On October 14, the first two episodes of Vision Quest will officially launch on Disney+, where we'll finally see how these questions are answered.
