On October 10, the Anita Mui International Fan Club announced that fans discovered the theft of Anita Mui's ashes, which had been placed at the Haihui Tower of Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, while paying respects on July 18. Anita Mui's elder brother, Mei Qiming, subsequently urged anyone with information to contact the police as soon as possible during a memorial service in Guangzhou.

Mei Qiming said he learned about the theft of his sister's ashes from media reports; his last visit to pay respects was in July of the previous year. He expressed shock and anger over the incident. At the time the news broke, he was in Guangzhou, originally planning a memorial service for his mother, but he temporarily changed the theme to commemorate Anita Mui upon hearing the news.

Mei Qiming stated that he funded the memorial service, where flowers and photos of Anita Mui were displayed. During the event, he repeatedly urged anyone with information to contact the police in hopes of recovering the ashes soon. Overcome with emotion, he eventually knelt down and wept bitterly at the memorial.

Mei Qiming denied allegations that he had taken the ashes. He also stated that he did not know the motives of whoever took them and had not received any contact related to extortion.
