European Commission Investigates 10 Game Companies Over Virtual Currency Sales, Focusing on Fixed-Denomination Packs

The European Commission is investigating the in-game currency sales practices of ten gaming companies, focusing on whether fixed-denomination currency packs prevent players from buying only the amount needed for a single item. Companies involved include Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and Mojang.

When purchasing in-game items, players may need to buy fixed-denomination virtual currency packs, even if the required amount is less than the pack's value. This investigation focuses on whether more precise purchasing options can be provided, as well as microtransaction transparency and parental controls.

Fortnite's V-Bucks and Destiny 2's Silver are both in-game currencies. In October 2025, Epic Games adjusted Fortnite's purchase policy, allowing players to buy V-Bucks in the exact amounts needed for cosmetic items; similar changes were also applied to Rocket League and Fall Guys.

These proposed adjustments do not mean that the investigated companies will adopt the same practices. The investigation does not impose automatic fines on the companies involved, and no final conclusions or penalties have been issued yet.
