Developer Sword has added support for PS2 physical discs to PS5SX2, an emulator designed for jailbroken PS5 consoles. This feature was introduced in the v2.01 beta released on October 10. When a disc is inserted for the first time, the emulator copies its content to the console's storage, and subsequent launches run from this copy rather than directly from the disc.
Sword previously demonstrated inserting a PS2 disc into a PS5 but stated that this functionality has only been tested on one original-model PS5 so far. The PS5's built-in optical drive appears unable to read CD-format discs, meaning some PS2 titles released on CD may not work via the internal drive.
The v2.02 update, released later that day, added an experimental option (disabled by default) that attempts to read PS2 discs through USB DVD or Blu-ray drives. This option could be helpful for digital-edition PS5 consoles that lack a built-in optical drive.
PS5SX2 can render visuals at up to six times the native PS2 resolution, though the project notes caution that standard PS5 hardware may struggle with this setting in some games. Sword also plans to add PS3 disc support to another emulator port currently in development; this remains a future plan and is not part of PS5SX2's current features.
