Doom Eternal Composer Mick Gordon Opposes Generative AI in Creation, Citing Limitations of Legacy Material

Mick Gordon, composer for DOOM Eternal, opposes the use of generative AI in creative work. In an interview with IGN during PAX Australia 2026, he stated that such systems learn from existing materials and are limited by their training data; in his view, humans can propose more fundamentally new ideas. Gordon also contributed to the soundtrack of the 2016 DOOM.

Gordon believes that listeners will continue to value human-to-human creation and interaction. Discussing his creative process, he sampled chainsaw sounds to craft distinctive guitar riffs while composing for DOOM, and used traditional wind instruments for the soundtrack of Killer Instinct in 2013.

Gordon is currently working on Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 and the team-based shooter Flawed. He also plans to perform music from the DOOM series with a full band at the RADAR Festival in 2027.
