The returning Monk class in Diablo V will continue to focus on melee combat, striking demons with fists and feet. Blizzard wants players to recognize the familiar Monk while presenting an improved version of the class.
In action RPGs, the class you choose affects how players fight and which abilities they prioritize when developing their characters. The core of the Diablo series is battling demons. Therefore, each class in Diablo V needs its own playstyle while integrating into the overall character progression system. Bringing back classic classes gives developers the opportunity to redesign familiar skills and combat mechanics. However, whether these classes are merely reskinned returns remains to be seen in the final product.
Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Diablo V will launch with more classes than any previous Diablo game. This allows players to experiment with more combat styles. Returning classes include the Monk. Blizzard also discussed how they plan to update this class from Diablo III.
Blizzard Art Director John Mueller recently discussed the Monk with Esquire, comparing returning classes to Batman. He said, "If you play as Batman, he might be wearing a new Batsuit, but he is still Batman." His point is that the Monk can have a new look while remaining recognizable to players.
Mueller also said:"Players last saw these classes in Diablo III. The technology in 2012 was different from today. Having progressed through Diablo IV, we hope to bring players the best versions of [the Monk and Demon Hunter classes] in 2029."
The Monk excels in close-quarters combat, primarily relying on powerful strikes against demons rather than traditional weapons. Game Director Shelly highly values this hands-on approach. He asked, "Who doesn't love smashing demons to pieces with their fists?" With the Monk's return, Blizzard can preserve this playstyle while updating its visual and tactile feel in combat. However, the studio has not yet revealed the Monk's full moveset or detailed how its abilities will change compared to Diablo III. Based on Mueller's comments, Blizzard aims to create an improved yet familiar Monk.
The Demon Hunter will also return in Diablo V, continuing to use agile tactics and iconic dual crossbows. Shelly stated that the Demon Hunter is a lightly armored warrior who can move quickly and pin demons to walls. In addition to these returning classes, Blizzard has added the brand-new Plague Knight. This class wears heavy armor and is designed with battlefield control in mind.
Currently, the Monk's return best illustrates Blizzard's approach to handling familiar classes. According to Mueller, Blizzard will use updated technology to improve the Monk while keeping its original class identity at the core. Diablo V is scheduled for release in 2029. Players will have to wait to see what this returning class ultimately feels like to play.
