Former Naughty Dog.exe VFX artist Matt Radford discussed game length, noting that massive titles like GTA 6 or the next Elder Scrolls can feel somewhat daunting. He personally looks forward to shorter, more focused experiences.
Radford previously worked on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and now runs the studio 5th Corner. In an interview with Kiwi Talkz, he explained that players have limited time to spend on games. Titles requiring over 50 hours can be difficult for some to complete, while shorter games can be finished in a weekend or two.
Regarding his own gaming preferences, he felt The Last of Us Part II was too long and expressed nostalgia for the roughly 6-to-8-hour campaigns of earlier Uncharted titles. He also suggested that studios focusing on tighter experiences might have an opportunity to reduce the development costs of modern blockbusters.
However, Radford did not dismiss GTA 6 because of this. He stated that he believes the game will be excellent and hopes for its success, as he sees its failure as a bad sign for the industry.
