Recently, Liang Qiwei, CEO of S-Games, stated that while Phantom Blade Zero is a large-scale AAA project in terms of scope and budget, the team still aims to retain an "indie game spirit." Even with a substantial budget, the developers are willing to try approaches outside established frameworks and are not afraid to take risks.
For many years, S-Games primarily developed mobile games. Phantom Blade Zero marks the studio's first AAA title as it transitions to the PC platform. Liang Qiwei stated that the team initially lacked experience with AAA projects, requiring them to build relevant capabilities from scratch during development and recruit young developers to participate in production.
The studio also assigned critical tasks, such as boss battles and the game's opening sequence, to members who previously lacked relevant experience. Liang Qiwei believes that these members, not yet constrained by mature production pipelines, helped the team make bolder attempts in action game design.
