Foreign Media Suggests Dino-Riders for a Reboot! Mattel Files New Trademarks for Toys and Games

On August 27, 2026, Mattel filed a new trademark application for "Dino-Riders" toys and games. A ComicBook.com author suggested that this older property, which combines dinosaurs with space faction conflicts, is well-suited for redevelopment; however, this assessment does not reflect an official development plan announced by Mattel.

In reviewing dinosaur-themed film and television works, the author compares "Dino-Riders" to the "Jurassic World" series. While both feature dinosaurs, "Dino-Riders" also involves warfare between space factions: the Valorians and Rulons travel through time during their flight and pursuit, arriving 65 million years in the past. The villains control dinosaurs for battle, while the Valorians use technology to communicate with them.

The "Dino-Riders" animated series aired in 1988 as a companion to the Tyco toy line, with production involvement from Marvel. Contributors included Gerry Conway, co-creator of "The Punisher," and his wife Carla. The animation ran for only 14 episodes, though the toy line lasted longer. The series generated $35 million in U.S. toy sales in its first year but was discontinued in 1990 due to high production costs. Mattel acquired Tyco in 1997.

Mattel has recently been pushing its brands into the film and gaming sectors. In addition to this recent trademark application for toys and games, "Dino-Riders" also has a record of previous film-related trademark applications and extensions. Mattel explored a live-action film project in 2015, which has yet to move beyond the development stage; these current trademark actions should not be taken as confirmation that a movie, series, toy line, or game has been officially greenlit.
