The ModRetro Chromatic handheld in transparent editions is now available, offered in Smoke, Purple, Green, and Red colorways, with the base model priced at $149.99. This handheld can play physical Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, and each unit comes with a transparent edition Tetris cartridge.
The transparent shell reveals the internal components. ModRetro states that the custom LCD used in the handheld matches the original screen in size, pixel structure, and color scheme. In addition to playing old cartridges, the Chromatic can also use new physical game cartridges sold by ModRetro.
Accessories are sold separately, with the link cable for multiplayer gaming priced at $14.99. The first product in the Chromatic series launched in 2024; this release features a new transparent shell variant rather than being a reproduction of the original Game Boy Color hardware.
The Game Boy Color was released in 1998, distinguishing itself from the original 1989 Game Boy with its color screen. Titles such as Pokémon Crystal and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX were released during its lifespan.
