Sony has announced the Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console, scheduled for release in Japan on November 19th at a price of 55,000 yen. On the same day, a Midnight Black disc drive will also be launched, allowing players to add it to their consoles.
The model confirmed for release is the Japan-specific version. When using this console, the country or region of your PlayStation account must be set to Japan, and the system language must also be set to Japanese. Sony has not yet announced whether the same console will be released in European and American markets.
The Japan-specific PS5 Digital Edition was first announced in November 2025, with the aim of expanding the user base in the Japanese market at a lower price. A Sony Interactive Entertainment executive previously stated that exchange rate fluctuations had caused consoles to flow from Japan to overseas markets; restricting Japanese accounts allows the company to set prices for the local market that differ from those of the multilingual digital edition.
Sony has already sold Midnight Black console shells in some overseas markets, but the shell is a different product from the Japan-specific complete console announced this time. Currently, news of the Midnight Black Digital Edition console's release is limited to Japan.
