GTA 6 Development Build Exceeds 200GB, Hinting at a Massive Final Release Size

Due to its massive map scale, GTA 6's file size could set a new record for AAA games.

Cyberleek threatened to leak a Rockstar development build exceeding 200 GB. However, compression technology could make the official download files for Xbox and PS5 consoles much smaller.

As Cyberleek continues to upload gameplay videos, the file size of the recently leaked GTA 6 build has also been revealed. A new report states that the development version used to create these videos exceeds 200 GB. This might put some pressure on Xbox and PS5 console players, but the download size for the final release before launch could be smaller.

If Cyberleek's "meme coin" reaches a market cap of $30 million, he promises to release a complete playable version exceeding 200 GB. This file size refers to the package size shared on piracy sites, or possibly the storage space occupied on the leaker's hard drive.

The Cost of a Massive Open World

The project's massive scale could lead to a staggering file size for GTA 6. In an interview last August, Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, confirmed that the map is roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V's open world. The areas around Vice City and Leonida are also packed with incredibly rich detail.

For comparison, the enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto V on PS5 takes up about 95 GB of console storage, while PC users need 105 GB. Considering that some Call of Duty: Black Ops titles already exceed 200 GB, doubling the size for GTA 6 isn't unprecedented. Nevertheless, many players may have to make some compromises before GTA 6 officially launches on November 19.

Due to component shortages, storage expansion costs for Xbox and PS5 are rising. Players disappointed by the lack of a disc drive now have another reason to regret choosing digital-only consoles. Even with additional downloads required, players with monthly data caps still prefer Blu-ray discs.
