Battlefield 6's Season 5 will introduce the Area 51 map. When members of the creative team involved in developing the season were asked if the map contained Easter eggs, they stated they could neither confirm nor deny it. Whether there are hidden contents in the map remains uncertain.
Battlefield isn't always as serious as you might think. Over the years, the series has had its silly moments and developed an inseparable bond with Easter eggs. If you're unfamiliar with the term, Easter eggs are jokes or secrets hidden within games.
Battlefield 6 itself already feels like a collection of Easter eggs: rare reload animations are back, and so are drivable sofas. One of the maps launching in Season 5 is set in Area 51. As everyone knows, that's a place shrouded in mystery and secrecy, perfect for hiding a few more things.
I interviewed Nicholas Bombrey, a member of the season's creative team responsible for crafting new experiences for Battlefield players. I asked him about the secrets hidden within the game.
"I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of any Easter eggs in Area 51." Bombrey's response regarding what goodies might be hidden in Area 51 echoed the tone the US government has adopted over the years. I also wanted to know what the process of inserting secrets into Battlefield is like: at what stage of design would someone suggest placing a few pizza boxes in a tunnel just because they like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
"There's no fixed procedure for this. That's what makes Easter eggs interesting." Bombrey continued, explaining that sometimes employees just go ahead and create them: "Sometimes, someone creates something without telling anyone and then shows it to the group. We'd think, 'Oh, should we put this in the game? Can we put this in the game?'"
Over the years, the little surprises hidden in Battlefield have taken on an air of mystery. Whether it's megalodons or yetis in the mountains, few players today would glance at a Battlefield map without taking a second look. What do those four sticks mean? Why are those bricks stacked that way? Is that an alien skull?
I suspect Bombrey knows something, though I can't prove it. "They always find a way to appear," he said. Looks like I'll have to thoroughly search Area 51—not that I wouldn't have done so anyway.
