Some of the boss battle music for "Phantom Blade Zero" was composed before the bosses' designs, presentations, and combat structures were finalized. Composer Bo Caisheng mentioned that the creative director would sometimes conceptualize corresponding bosses while listening to the music.
Bo cited an example where the team asked him to compose a piece before any art design was done, hoping to draw development inspiration from it. However, that track ultimately did not make it into the final production, as composing music first doesn't always guarantee its direct use. In terms of musical style, he aimed to blend traditional Chinese instruments with rock, metal, and electronic music, rather than sticking to conventional orchestral arrangements.
An early track created for the Bride Boss was rewritten due to internal team feedback. The original version was later added to the in-game music player included with the Deluxe Edition pre-order bonus.
The in-game music player also features a jazz piece composed with traditional Chinese instruments. This track didn't fit any suitable gameplay scenario, so it was not included in the main game.
