Epic Proposes AI-First Approach: Former Fortnite Producer Believes Unreal Engine Will Drive AI Adoption

After Epic Games proposed accelerating the adoption of AI in game development, Aakash Gupta, who worked on Fortnite, discussed this direction. He believes that since Epic controls Unreal Engine, integrating AI features into tools commonly used by developers will drive their adoption in actual workflows.

Gupta stated that once Epic decides to shift direction, its internal teams, leaders, and development roadmaps adjust quickly. Therefore, he was not surprised by the company's "AI-first" approach.

In Gupta's view, public debates surrounding AI art, AI voice acting, and store disclosure requirements may not necessarily prevent development teams from using these features. He also claims that Epic has integrated models like Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine, citing a developer survey on AI usage to support his assessment. These statements regarding usage and adoption trends remain Gupta's personal opinions.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has previously publicly supported the use of generative AI in game development. As such features become integrated into development tools, how developers use them and how players are informed about their scope have also become part of this discussion.
