The live-action project was officially announced in 2024, adapting Makoto Shinkai's 2007 animated film of the same name. The original work uses a segmented narrative to depict the protagonist's relationships at different stages of life: childhood friends Takaki Tohno and Akari Shinohara are separated by changing circumstances, promising to stay in touch as time and distance gradually affect their bond.
