As is well known, developing video games is more expensive than ever before. In this industry driven by blockbuster hits, rumors suggest that GTA 6 is the most expensive game ever made. Various estimates have been circulated, with some reports claiming its development costs reached as high as $1.5 billion, roughly equivalent to the construction budget of Dubai's landmark Burj Khalifa.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Rockstar denied the $1.5 billion figure but has not confirmed exactly how much was spent to ensure the game meets its November release date.
The game has been in development for many years, involving numerous studios and employees, including a dedicated NPC department based in Los Angeles, so the final cost is likely to be quite high. However, GTA 6 is expected to recoup its costs quickly and begin generating substantial profits for Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive.
Reports indicate that pre-orders for the game have exceeded 5 million copies, generating over $500 million in revenue. By launch day, pre-orders are projected to reach 25 million copies, corresponding to $2 billion in revenue. It is important to note that pre-orders do not equate to final confirmed sales. Take-Two's head, Strauss Zelnick, has also commented on this matter, so these figures remain subject to change.
Even before selling the base game, Rockstar appears to have generated considerable revenue from merchandise: the $400 Collector's Edition of GTA 6 proved popular when pre-orders opened a few weeks ago, despite being essentially a box containing GTA 6 memorabilia.
Rockstar Games has not yet discussed the online multiplayer component of GTA 6, but rumors suggest it will launch in 2027.
GTA Online, the multiplayer mode of Grand Theft Auto V, generates hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue annually, so GTA 6's online mode is also expected to become a significant income source for Rockstar and Take-Two. But will GTA 6 be able to draw players away from GTA Online? Chet Faliszek, formerly of Valve, recently stated that this might not be easy, as many GTA Online players have invested considerable time and effort into the game and may be reluctant to abandon the social spaces they have cultivated over the years.
No matter what choice Rockstar makes, it cannot satisfy everyone. It must find a compromise that appeals to as many players as possible.
