"Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: Memory Reset" Sells Well, Yet Development Studio Faces Layoffs

Approximately three months after the release of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: Memory Reset, Ubisoft laid off 70 employees at Ubisoft Singapore, who had worked on the title, and announced plans to fully shut down RedLynx.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: Memory Reset sold 2 million copies on its first day, reached 3 million in its first week, and surpassed its full-year sales forecast within two weeks of release. Previously, Ubisoft Barcelona, which had supported the title, laid off nearly one-third of its staff shortly after the game's launch.

Founded in 2000 and acquired by Ubisoft in 2011, RedLynx is best known for the Trials series. The latest entry, Trials Rising, was released in 2019. Since then, the studio has supported the development of Star Wars Outlaws and launched the mobile game Gwen's Escape.

About a year ago, Ubisoft proposed a restructuring plan for RedLynx, aiming to reduce costs and improve project scheduling efficiency across its global studio network. Regarding the closure, Ubisoft stated that RedLynx currently has no other ongoing projects and would struggle to remain operational even with downsizing. In its statement, Ubisoft said it would handle employee-related procedures with care and respect.
