PlayStation users using pirated or homebrew software are facing a dilemma. Sony now requires users to install the latest firmware version 14.10 to log into PSN. This means that PS5 consoles using jailbreak programs or exploit tools may be unable to play purchased games online or use network features if they do not update the system.
A user in the PS5homebrew section shared what happened when trying to log into a PSN account on a console running firmware version 14.00: without updating the system software, only offline features are available.
The Relapse PS5 jailbreak tool has been modified and now supports system software version 13.60. Once kernel read/write access is obtained, users can run unofficial applications. Even more concerning for Sony, this also opens the door to piracy and running game backups.
The Byepervisor Reborn exploit tool is also gaining popularity. Like Relapse, this tool for bypassing the hypervisor had been functional until the arrival of firmware version 14.00, released on September 16. Sony subsequently launched version 14.10 on October 1, adding more unspecified security fixes.
Homebrew enthusiasts on Reddit have been avoiding newer firmware versions. Some keep their consoles offline, while others continue to use PSN features. However, the latter approach is no longer viable, forcing them to make difficult choices. Another option is to continue waiting, hoping that exploit developers will discover new vulnerabilities.
Without an internet connection, multiplayer modes in PS4 and PS5 games often cannot function properly. If digital licenses cannot be verified, games may even fail to load entirely. Consoles using PS5 jailbreak tools also cannot access the PlayStation Store.
Requiring PSN users to update their systems is not new. However, other signs suggest that Sony may have noticed an increase in piracy activities. The disappearance of the homebrew application Overdrive has sparked speculation about whether Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a cease-and-desist notice. The store previously offered backups of popular games for users to download.
Unauthorized clones of the Overdrive store quickly emerged. Nevertheless, publishers may also be starting to recognize the threat posed by jailbreaking. Data mining results indicate that although GTA6 is primarily a single-player experience, the game will still require consoles to run system software version 14.10 upon release.
